Eligibility: Awarded to a graduate student registered full-time in a master's or doctoral program who is studying and researching suicide and suicide prevention, especially in the following areas: the effect of parenting on the potential suicide or suicide, without depending on self-reporting of parents or caregivers; attitudes (historical, religious and secular) in society towards suicide; ways/methods to open the constrictive perceptions of the depressed/suicidal person to enable them to see there are other choices; and critical balanced examination of historical to present day treatments of depressed/suicidal persons. Research in the areas of suicide by terminally ill persons and murder- suicides are not eligible. The recipient's research must not involve animal experimentation or biochemical research, nor should any of the research findings be used in marketing. Recipients may be nominated to hold the award for a second year at the master's level and for an additional four years at the doctoral level. If there is no suitable candidate, no award will be offered. Part-time students are eligible for this award.

Sidney Hanson Graduate Scholarship in International Business

Harry J Hargrave Memorial Graduate Scholarship in Animal Science

Eligibility: Awarded annually to two students registered in graduate degree programs showing superior communication and academic skills, preferably in the area of beef cattle or sheep production. Practical agricultural experience is required.

A transcript of the applicant's University record should be attached to the application form, or arrangements made to have a copy mailed. A letter of reference is required from a faculty member familiar with the work of the applicant.

Harington Paleoenvironmental Scholarship

Eligibility: Awarded annually to an academically outstanding full-time graduate student in Earth and Atmospheric Sciences who is conducting research in Quaternary environments, preferably in Canada. Walter and Phyllis Harris Graduate Scholarship in Chemistry

Eligibility: Supplemental funding awarded to an outstanding student who will be entering a full-time graduate degree program in the Department of Chemistry and whose research will be in analytical chemistry. Selection will be based on superior academic achievement. Based on continuing satisfactory performance, and the recommendation of the Department of Chemistry, the scholarship may be renewed for an additional year at the master’s level, and up to an additional two years at the doctoral level.

Lesley Heathcote Graduate Scholarship

Dr Roy Dean Hibbs Graduate Student Travel Award
Endowed by Mrs Nancy Hibbs, Ms Mary Hibbs, and friends of the late Dr Roy Dean Hibbs. Dr Hibbs was a geophysics graduate student in the Department of Physics from 1970 - 1977. He received an MSc in 1972 and a PhD in 1977. His research was in electromagnetic induction in the Earth, and his numerical studies of source effects in two- and three-dimensional problems provided an important early contribution in that field. After graduating from the University of Alberta, Dr Hibbs held a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Victoria and subsequently worked in the petroleum industry on projects in Canada, United States and Libya. Dr Hibbs died in a tragic plane crash in Libya in January 2000.

Eligibility: There is one competition each year and awards will be offered on a competitive basis. Applicants must be enrolled full-time in graduate degree programs in Physics, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences or Mathematical and Statistical Sciences at the University of Alberta and engaged in geophysical research. The purpose of the award is to provide travel assistance to present papers (either oral or poster) at national or international conferences and workshops. Recipients will be required to submit a written report and presentation upon returning to the University.
Application: Application forms are available from the Institute for Geophysical Research, Rm. 245B3 CEB. An abstract of the paper to be presented, evidence of acceptance of the paper, and a letter of support from the student's supervisor must be included with each application.

Eligibility: Awarded annually to an undergraduate or graduate student with satisfactory academic standing entering the second, third, or fourth year of a degree program in the Faculty of Business. This award is granted to assist a student with the cost of undertaking study abroad at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology as part of a University of Alberta degree.

Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office MBA Award in International Business

Myer Horowitz Graduate Students' Association Graduate Scholarship

Eligibility: Awarded annually in the Fall on the basis of academic merit to full-time students in graduate degree programs who have received no or limited financial support from the University of Alberta. Holders of major awards (as defined by the Graduate Scholarship Committee) will not be considered. The scholarship may be held only once by a student. Approximately eight awards are granted each year.
Application: There is no application form; the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research will request a nomination from each department. The nomination must include a detailed description of all of the nominee's sources of funding (ie assistantships, bursaries, employment income, external and U of A Scholarships, loans and tuition supplements). The Graduate Scholarship Committee will make the final selection.
Deadline: 1 October for submission of nominations from departments to the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research.

IODE War Memorial Scholarships for Doctoral Study
Value: $15,000 in Canada; $15,000 for study overseas; a maximum of five awarded annually.
Eligibility: Applicants must be Canadian citizens and must hold a first degree from a recognized university or degree-granting college in Canada. At the time of applying, applicants must be enrolled in at least the second year of a program at the doctoral level, or equivalent. The appointment is subject to cancellation if the winner does not continue to show high academic and personal qualities. Tenable at any accredited university in Canada or overseas within the Commonwealth. Winners are expected to seek employment in Canada upon completion of their studies.

Eligibility: Awarded annually to two students attending a major scientific conference to present a paper or poster related to their research ($300 master's level and $700 doctoral level). Candidates must be registered full-time in a MSc or PhD program in a discipline in the Faculty of Agricultural, Life and Environmental Sciences. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence, the significance of the research to the canola industry and the calibre of the scientific conference will also be considered.
Application: Eligible students should contact their Department Chair in order to be considered for nomination. Applicants must submit a letter of application with an estimate of travel and accommodation costs, a copy of the submitted abstract and a brief statement describing the significance of the research to the canola industry.

Martha Ruth Johnson Bursary
Endowed by Martha Ruth Johnson who supports students with disabilities at the University of Alberta. For nearly 20 years, thanks to Martha's generous donations, Specialized Support and Disability Services has been able to provide motorized scooters for many students with injuries or limited mobility to enable them to get around campus. She also has provided funding for adaptive technology and other disability-related needs. This award is a further example of her generosity and kindness.

Joseph and Melitta Kandler Scholarship for International Student Exchange with Austria
Endowed by Dr Joseph Kandler, a native of Vienna, and a graduate of the Hochschule fuer Welthandel, now named the Wirtschaftsuniversitaet Vienna, who is a former member of the Senate and Board of Governors of the University of Alberta. Melitta Kandler began her studies at the University of Graz, Austria and graduated with an MA from the University of Alberta.
Value: $3,500 for two terms of study or $2,500 for one term of study.
Eligibility: Awarded annually to five students, in undergraduate or graduate degree programs who wish to study at Wirtschaftsuniversitaet (WU). WU is located near the city-center of Vienna, Austria, was founded in 1898, and has grown to accommodate a student body of approximately 25,000. Known in English as the Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration, it is housed in a large, modern complex and offers 4 regular study programs: business administration, business education, international trade, and economics. Within these programs, there are 20 fields of specialization, including marketing, banking, finance, personnel management and many more. There is a good selection of courses in English and German. The scholarships are offered for a full academic year or for 1 Term. Terms at WU run from the beginning of October to the beginning of February or from the end of February to the end of June. There also are a number of courses available during the summer.

Eligibility: Awarded biennially to a full-time student registered in a master's or doctoral program in the Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation at the University of Alberta to assist with travel expenses to attend and present a scholarly paper accepted for the program at the biennial World Congress of Leisure (organized by the World Leisure and Recreation Association). A committee established by the Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation will choose the recipient of this award on the basis of their application.

Margaret "Presh" Kates Aboriginal Doctoral Award in Education

Eligibility: Awarded annually to a student registered full-time in a doctoral program in an education department within the Faculty of Education, who is of Aboriginal descent as defined by the Constitution Act, 1982, Section 35(2) or is accepted by one of the Aboriginal peoples of Canada as a member of their community. The recipient must have completed the PhD program course work with satisfactory academic standing as well as the Candidacy Exam and have a firm expectation of completing the dissertation within 2-4 months of receiving the award.
Application: Eligible students must be recommended to the Dean, Faculty of Education by their Dissertation Supervisor. The supervisor should submit a letter of recommendation approximately six months prior to the expected completion date of the dissertation. The Dean of the Faculty of Education will select the nominee and forward one name to the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research for approval.

The award will be adjudicated by three members of the department, one of whom must be in mathematics education and one of whom will not be in mathematics education. Mathematics professors in Elementary Education will be consulted for nominations prior to the committee selection meeting.

Eligibility: Awarded annually on the basis of superior academic achievement (equivalent to a grade point average of 3.5/4.0 on the University of Alberta grading scale) to a student registered full-time or part-time in a graduate degree program in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering who is conducting research in geotechnical behaviour or the environmental impact of mine tailings. Eligibility: Awarded annually on the basis of superior academic achievement (equivalent to a grade point average of 3.5 or greater on the University of Alberta grading scale) to a student registered full-time in a doctoral degree program in the Faculty of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences who is conducting research in the innovative design, development or delivery of drugs or diagnostic agents. Students registered in a doctoral program are eligible to hold awards during years one through five of their program.
Application: Eligible students will be required to apply to the Pharmacy Graduate Studies Awards Committee in response to the June competition announcement. The name of the nominee will be forwarded to the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research by September 15 for final approval by the Graduate Scholarship Committee.

Koshal Family Graduate Scholarship in the Study of India

Eligibility: Awarded annually to a student registered in a graduate degree program in a department within the Faculty of Arts whose research in any humanities, fine arts or social science area focuses on Indian, Indo-Canadian or Indo-American studies. This award is open to full-time or part-time students. The scholarship will be awarded based upon academic excellence and the relevance and quality of the research. There is no restriction on citizenship. If no suitable candidate is available for one year, the scholarship will not be awarded.

Henry Kreisel Scholarship in Canadian Literature

Henry Kroeger Memorial Graduate Scholarship

Eligibility: Awarded annually to two graduate students of superior academic ability whose research is in the area of soil and water resources as directed towards the enhancement of rural life in Western Canada and Alberta in particular. Recipients may be in the field of agricultural engineering, civil engineering, geography, geology, plant science, rural economy or soil science as it relates to soil conservation, water resources management, and irrigation.

Karol J Kròtki Population Research Graduate Scholarship
Endowed by the Society of Edmonton Demographers who created the Alberta Endowment Fund for Demographic Research. The Karol J Kròtki Population Research Graduate Scholarship commemorates the memory and work of Dr Karol J Kròtki, a leading international demographer. The scholarship recognizes an outstanding student registered in a PhD program in the Department of Sociology at the University of Alberta whose specialization is demography and/or quantitative sociology.
Value: $4,600
Eligibility: The recipient of the scholarship will have demonstrated, through a combination of course work and research, excellence in one or more of the following areas: formal demographic methods; quantitative sociological methods; social demographic theory. Applicants must be full-time doctoral students registered in the Department of Sociology in an academic program having significant demographic content. Applicants must have completed a full year of course work in the doctoral program with First Class academic standing (3.5/4.0 GPA) and their specialization exam. There is no restriction on citizenship. The recipient is required to submit a written report to the Sociology Graduate Office within 12 months of receipt of the award. The report must include a research statement of progress and an accounting of research expenses. The scholarship is non-renewable.
Application: A completed application must be received in the Sociology Graduate Program Office on or before 1st October. Application instructions are available from the Graduate Office in the Department of Sociology, 5-21 Tory. The Department of Sociology's Graduate Admissions and Awards Committee will review all applications. The name of the recommended candidate will be forwarded to the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research by the Associate Chair of the Department of Sociology.
E William Kuder Memorial Graduate Scholarship in Rehabilitation Medicine

Eligibility: Awarded annually to six full-time students registered in the first or second year of a graduate degree program in the Department of Occupational Therapy, Department of Physical Therapy, and the Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology (two scholarships offered in each of the three departments). Recipients will be selected on the basis of superior academic standing (minimum grade point average equivalent to 3.5 on the University of Alberta grading scale) and who, after graduation, intend to give at least one year of service in Alberta outside the metropolitan centres of Edmonton and Calgary.
Application: Eligible students should submit a letter of application to their home department in the Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine by August 1st. The Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research will request the names of two eligible applicants from each department for final approval.
Kule Folklore Graduate Recruitment Award

The purpose of the Award is to recruit excellent students newly admitted into a full-time graduate degree program studying Ukrainian or Canadian Folklore at the University of Alberta. Kule Ukrainian Folklore Graduate Travel Bursary

Eligibility: Awarded annually to graduate students registered in Ukrainian Folklore in the Department of Modern Languages and Cultural Studies to support travel to participate in a conference, conduct fieldwork, or archival research relevant to their program of studies. Application: Students must complete an application form, available through www.ukrfolk.ca (see Teaching >> Student Awards), and write a cover letter to the Award Committee of the Peter and Doris Kule Centre for Ukrainian and Canadian Folklore in the Department of Modern Languages and Cultural Studies, to explain the goals of the trip plus provide financial information. Complete applications and supporting documents must be submitted by October 25 or April 25.
