Labatt's MBA Fellow Award

Funded by John Labatt Limited

Value: $3,600

Eligibility: Awarded annually to a student entering the second year of the MBA program, on the basis of high academic achievement and other contributions exhibited by the student during the first year of the MBA program. The award carries with it the distinction of the title "Labatt's Fellow".

James Lam Graduate Award in Not-for-Profit Management

Funded by James Lam

Value: $1,000

Eligibility: Awarded annually to a student with satisfactory academic achievement entering the first or second year of full-time study in a MBA program at the Alberta School of Business. Applicants must have a demonstrated interest in the not-for-profit sector. The recipient will be selected on the basis of academic standing and a one-page summary outlining the applicant’s current involvement and or future career intentions in the not-for-profit sector.

Application: Eligible students should submit a letter of application and resume to the MBA Office, Alberta School of Business, 2-30 Business, University of Alberta by April 15th.

Michael Lang MBA Award in Business

Eligibility: Awarded annually to a student enrolled full-time in a specialization of the first year of the MBA degree program. The recipient will be selected on the basis of academic performance, work experience prior to entering the program, and GMAT score.

Quinlan Patric Baxter Langen Pediatric Cardiology Trainee Award

Endowed by the Klaiber and Langen families in memory of Quinlan Patric Baxter Langen

Value: minimum $1,000

Eligibility: Awarded annually to a trainee(s) enrolled in either the MD/PhD Program or the Clinical Investigator Program at the University of Alberta whose research or work relates to pediatric hypoplastic left heart syndrome. If there is no suitable candidate doing work or research in pediatric hypoplastic left heart syndrome in any given year a trainee doing work or research in the area of pediatric congenital heart defects may be considered.

Application: Eligible students will be considered automatically by the Department of Pediatrics and forwarded to the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry for final approval.

ME Lazerte Memorial Graduate Scholarship

Funded by the Education Society of Edmonton

Value: $1,500

Eligibility: Awarded annually on the basis of superior academic standing and leadership potential to a student registered full-time in a graduate degree program in an education department within the Faculty of Education.

Application: There is no application form; eligible students will be considered automatically by the Faculty of Education and the Faculty of Education will forward the name of one nominee to the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research by September 15th. The Graduate Scholarship Committee will make the final selection.

Leah Memorial Graduate Scholarship in Music

Endowed by Barbara Leah in memory of her parents, Frank and Dollie Leah

Value: $850

Eligibility: Awarded annually to a full-time student registered in a graduate degree program in the Department of Music on the basis of superior academic standing. Preference will be given to a student in the area of piano performance who is not the recipient of a major award as defined by the Graduate Scholarship Committee of the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research.

Application: There is no application form; eligible students will be considered automatically by the Department of Music.

Ledcor Graduate Scholarship in Construction Engineering and Management

Endowed by Ledcor Industries Inc.

Value: Variable

Eligibility: Awarded annually to students registered full-time in a graduate degree program in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering who are pursuing studies in construction engineering and management with interest in commercial, industrial, mining, heavy civil, or telecommunications construction. The recipient will be selected on the basis of superior academic standing (minimum grade point average equivalent to a 3.5 on the University of Alberta grading scale), research potential, and leadership skills. Students in a master’s degree program are eligible to hold scholarships during the first two years of their program and may only be offered this scholarship once during the two years. Students registered in a doctoral program are eligible to hold scholarships up to and including the fifth year of their program and may only be offered this scholarship once during these years.

Application: Application forms and information are available from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Eligible students should submit a complete application form, current resume and a description of their research in construction and its application to industry to the Chair, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Check with the department for information about the deadline for submission of application documents. A short list of candidates will be selected on the basis of the submitted application packages and these candidates will be invited to present their research to Faculty members. The final selection will be made by a committee within the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

Lehigh Inland Cement Graduate Scholarship in Environmental Studies

Eligibility: Awarded to a student entering or pursuing a graduate degree in environmental engineering studies at the University of Alberta with preference given to a student pursuing studies related to air pollution.

Application: The application process will be administered through departments in the Faculty of Engineering. A description of the research to be undertaken, a transcript of academic record, and the names of three referees must be included.

Deadline: September 15th for submission of nominations from the Faculty of Engineering to the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research. Check with the department for internal deadlines.

Lisa Lynn Leinweber Memorial Graduate Scholarship

Endowed by classmates, friends and family in memory of Lisa Lynn Leinweber who passed away in 1996 in a hiking accident

Value: $650

Eligibility: Awarded annually to a student registered full-time in a graduate degree program in the Department of Occupational Therapy. The recipient will be in the graduating class and should have achieved a balance between academic life and extracurricular activities, as demonstrated by involvement in the community, and participation in recreational and leisure activities. In addition, the recipient will demonstrate leadership qualities academically and personally and will have achieved outstanding scholarship and academic achievement (minimum grade point average equivalent to 3.5 on the University of Alberta grading scale).

Application: A list of nominees will be submitted by the graduating class to the Chair, Department of Occupational Therapy by November 1st. The Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research will request the name of one nominee for final approval.

Library and Information Studies Alumni Association Scholarship

Endowed by the Alma Mater Fund, the Library Science Alumni Association, and friends

Eligibility: Awarded annually to one student entering the first year of the MLIS program and to one student continuing in the program who have achieved high academic standing and demonstrated professional potential.

Application: There is no application form; eligible students will be considered automatically by the School of Library and Information Studies.

May and John Lockhart Career Enhancement Graduate Award in Occupational Therapy

Value: $800

Eligibility: Awarded annually to a student registered full-time in the final year of a graduate degree program in the Department of Occupational Therapy. The recipient will have satisfactory academic standing and demonstrate involvement in Occupational Therapy related extracurricular activities. Preference will be given to a student from a farm family or rural small business family in Western Canada. Any student in receipt of a scholarship or other award in the current academic year will not be eligible to receive this award. If there are no qualified applicants entering the final year of the program, a student in the first year of the program may be considered.

Application: Eligible students should submit a letter of application to the Chair, Department of Occupational Therapy by August 1st. The Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research will request the name of one nominee from the department for final approval.

Doreen M Lougheed (BCom '49) MBA Scholarship

Value: $4,250

Eligibility: Awarded annually on the basis of academic achievement to an outstanding female student, who is a Canadian citizen and an Alberta resident, registered in the first year of the MBA program. The scholarship is granted for two years, subject to review after the first year.

Eleanor Luxton Historical Foundation Graduate Fellowship

Funded by the Eleanor Luxton Historical Foundation to foster public awareness of the history of Banff and its environs during the period that the Luxton and McDougall families were influential in the community with emphasis on the careers of Norman K Luxton (1876-1962: Banff newspaperman, entrepreneur and friend of the Stoney people), Georgina McDougall Luxton (1872-1965: artist, gardener and granddaughter of pioneer Methodist missionaries), and Eleanor G Luxton (1908-1995: teacher, engineer, historian and collector) in that setting.

Value: $5,000 at the master’s level; $10,000 at the doctoral level

Eligibility: Awarded annually to students registered full-time in a master’s or PhD program in the Department of History and Classics at the University of Alberta for responsible historical research and publication in western Canadian history and in the roles of the Luxton and McDougall families in Banff, the Bow Valley, and western Canada in the 19th and 20th centuries. Among the prominent and relatively unstudied stories of this history are: the history of expedition adventures, including Luxton and Voss’s epic 1901 voyage from Victoria to Fiji in a coastal dugout canoe; the origins of newspaper journalism in western Canada, including EF Luxton’s leadership in the early days of the Winnipeg Free Press and NK Luxton’s editorship of the Banff Crag and Canyon; Eleanor Luxton’s varied career as teacher, design engineer of steam locomotives, museum researcher, scholar, historian, and author; the Luxton and McDougall families’ relations with native communities in western Canada in Morley, the west coast, and Banff Indian Days; the origins of nature conservation in western Canada including NK Luxton’s recovery of the Pablo buffalo heard; and the history of the interactions of bison and human settlements in the Bow Valley and the mountains. Other topics also may be considered. Applicants registered in master's programs normally are eligible to hold this award once during the first two years of their program. Applicants registered in doctoral programs normally are eligible to hold this award once up to and including the fifth year of their program. The number of fellowships awarded will depend on the quality of the applications received. Up to a maximum of three fellowships at the master’s level and/or up to a maximum of two fellowships at the PhD level will be offered each year.

MacAllister Scholarship in Agriculture

Eligibility: Awarded annually to a student in a graduate degree program in agriculture who is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident and has good academic standing. Students may apply for a second award. Part-time students are eligible for this award.

Application: Information regarding specific application requirements and application forms are available from the Dean, Faculty of Agricultural, Life and Environmental Sciences, 231 Agriculture Forestry. Each eligible department may forward the name of one nominee to the Faculty of Agricultural, Life and Environmental Sciences office. They will review the department nominations and forward a nomination form and a memo for the one candidate who is being recommended to the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research.

Dr John Macdonald Scholarship in Philosophy

Endowed by T Harold Fountain of Calgary, Alberta

Value: $4,000

Eligibility: Awarded annually to a student entering a graduate degree program in the Department of Philosophy on the basis of outstanding work in senior courses in philosophy. The successful candidate will have a GPA of no less than 3.5 and will demonstrate a particular interest in the philosophy of Kant or the field of ethics. The award is restricted to Canadian citizens or permanent residents. Although priority will be given to students who did their undergraduate work at the University of Alberta, consideration may be given to graduates of other Canadian universities.

Application: There is no application form; eligible students will be considered automatically by the Department of Philosophy.

Elizabeth Russell MacEachran Scholarship

Endowed by the late Dr JM MacEachran in memory of his wife who was the first dietician of the University residences

Eligibility: Awarded annually to two full-time students in graduate degree programs in a discipline in the Faculty of Agricultural, Life and Environmental Sciences, preferably in the field of Food Science and Nutrition.

Max MacLaggan Scholarship

Endowed initially with a grant from Mrs Esther MacLaggan and then supplemented by donations from friends and former employers

Eligibility: Awarded annually to a student in a graduate degree program in forestry with particular interest in forest renewal or forest operations.

Cathy MacPhail Career Development Scholarship

Eligibility: Awarded annually to a full-time MEd student in the Adult and Higher Education Program in the Department of Educational Policy Studies. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence and a commitment to career development. The award may be held only once by a student.

Jannetta MacPhail Award

Endowed by colleagues and friends of Jannetta MacPhail, former Dean of the Faculty of Nursing

Eligibility: Awarded annually to a PhD student in Nursing who has the highest GPA (at least 3.7) at the time of successful completion of the candidacy examination. The award may only be awarded once to the same individual.

Madsen Biochemistry Thesis Prize

Eligibility: Awarded to the graduate student in Biochemistry who submits the best PhD thesis at the Spring or Fall Convocation in a given year.

Bernard C O Mah (Giordano) MBA Award in International Business

Gerald J Maier/NOVA Chemicals Corporation Graduate Recruitment Award

Funded by Nova Chemicals Corporation

Value: $5,000

Eligibility: Awarded annually to five students admissible to a graduate degree program in a department within the Faculty of Engineering or the Department of Chemistry at the University of Alberta. The award is available to students who are engaged in one or more of the following areas of research: polymerization, polymer properties and processing, polymer catalysis, reaction engineering, fluid mechanics, process controls, modeling and simulation of process operations, heat and mass transfer, separation processes, thermodynamics, and other areas related to the chemical and polymer industries. The award is intended to assist with the recruitment of NSERC Postgraduate Scholarship recipients to the University of Alberta. The award also is available to recruit graduate students on student visas who hold major awards similar in value to the NSERC Postgraduate Scholarships.

Neil Manning MBA Scholarship in Family Enterprise

Eligibility: Awarded annually to a student registered full-time in year one or year two of a Master of Business Administration degree program. The recipient will have completed or be enrolled in either SMO 628 (Managing Family Enterprise) or SMO 642 (International Family Enterprise).  Selection will be based on superior academic standing (equivalent to a grade point average of 3.5 or greater on the University of Alberta grading scale) and demonstrated leadership in Business related extra-curricular activities.

David Marples Eastern European MA Travel Award

Funded by Professor David Marples

Value: $1,500

Eligibility: Awarded annually to a student registered full-time in a graduate degree program in the Department of History and Classics with satisfactory academic standing to provide travel funds to visit archives, libraries, or other research centres or attend language training in Eastern Europe (European territories of the former Soviet Union, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Hungary or former Yugoslavia). Preference will be given to students registered in the MA program. A student may only receive the award once.

Application: Eligible students should submit a written proposal and budget justifying their travel plans to the Associate Chair (Graduate), Department of History and Classics by April 30th. In selecting the recipient, the department will take financial need into consideration.

Jacob H Masliyah Graduate Award in Oil Sands Engineering

Initiated with funds from a Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) Award won by Dr Jacob Masliyah and matched by funds from the Vice-President (Research and External Affairs), University of Alberta, Syncrude Canada Limited, a Syncrude/ASTech Innovation in Oil Sands Research Award won by Jan Czarnekci, and Albian Sands Energy Inc

Don Mazankowski Graduate Scholarship in Nursing

Eligibility: Awarded annually to a full-time student entering a graduate degree program (MN or PhD) in the Faculty of Nursing. Selection will be made on the basis of academic excellence and community involvement and/or leadership.

Application: There is no application form; eligible students (applying in either January or September) will be considered automatically by the Faculty of Nursing on the basis of the information provided in their application documents. In nominating a student for the scholarship, the Faculty of Nursing will take financial need into consideration.

The Right Honourable Don Mazankowski MBA Award in International Business

Funded by The Don Mazankowski Scholarship Foundation and the School of Business

Value: Two awards at $1,200 each (funded annually by both the Foundation and the School of Business)

Eligibility: Awarded annually to one student enrolled full-time in the second year of the international business specialization in the MBA program and to one student enrolled in the part-time program of the international business specialization (regardless of year). Recipients will be selected on the basis of academic performance, work experience prior to entering the program, and GMAT scores.

MBA/MEng Scholarship in Leadership

Value: $2,000

Eligibility: Awarded annually to a student registered in the final year of the MBA/MEng joint degree program. The recipient will be selected on the basis of superior academic performance (grade point average of 3.5 or greater).   Leadership highlighted through involvement and participation in university or community organizations will also be considered.

Application: There is no application form; eligible students will be considered automatically by the School of Business.

BJ McBain Scholarship

Endowed by the estate of BJ McBain

Value: Master's applicants - $14,000; Doctoral applicants - $16,000

Eligibility: One scholarship awarded annually to a graduate student of outstanding academic merit interested in pursuing research in the economics of food and agriculture, for the purpose of encouraging and supporting applied research and development that will be of direct benefit to primary producers of basic food products in Western Canada. Applicants must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents.

Application: The scholarship is available to incoming or continuing full-time graduate students in the Department of Rural Economy. All eligible students entering the graduate program in Rural Economy will be considered for the award; continuing students are eligible to apply by 31 March. The scholarship may be offered to the same student for a second year. Awards offered for a second year at the Master's level may be offered for a 6-month (value of $7,000) or 12-month period (value of $14,000). Contact the Graduate Committee of the Department of Rural Economy, 515 General Services Building for information and application forms.

Hugh McCall Graduate Award

Value: $3,500

Eligibility: One award offered annually to a student registered full-time in a graduate degree program in the Department of Economics, Department of History and Classics, Department of Political Science, or the Department of Sociology whose research is related to US Policy Studies and whose research fits within the strategic research priorities of the Institute for US Policy Studies (IUSPS) at the University of Alberta. The award is to provide assistance for research and travel expenses and the recipient will be selected on the basis of satisfactory academic standing.

Application: Eligible students should submit a letter of application to the Chair of their home department by February 1. Each eligible department will submit the name of one nominee to the Dean, Faculty of Arts by February 15. The Faculty of Arts will make the final selection.

William H McCardell Memorial Scholarship in Forest Science

Eligibility: Offered annually to a student in a graduate degree program in the field of forestry. Preference may be given to students with particular interest in Forest Ecology or Wildland Recreation.

Don McColl Graduate Scholarship

Endowed by Phyllis Clark in honor of her husband Don McColl

Value: $2,000

Eligibility: Awarded annually on the basis of superior academic achievement, to a student in a master's or doctoral degree program in Fine Arts or Rehabilitation Medicine. In even-numbered years, the scholarship will be awarded for study in Fine Arts and in odd-numbered years, the scholarship will be awarded for study in Rehabilitation Medicine. In the event that a suitable candidate cannot be found in the specified area, the scholarship may be awarded in the other area. Part-time students are eligible for this award.

Application: There is no application form; the department will consider eligible students and one nomination will be accepted from eligible departments in the area in which the scholarship is to be awarded. The Graduate Scholarship Committee will make the final selection of the recipient.

H Jean McDiarmaid Scholarship

Eligibility: One scholarship will be awarded annually to a medical student who is has been admitted to a full-time MD/PhD Program in the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Alberta. The recipient will be selected on the basis of superior academic achievement (minimum grade point average equivalent to 3.5 on the University of Alberta grading scale). The scholarship is available for one year and will be provided to a student registered full-time in the first year of the PhD portion of the MD/PhD program.

Application: There is no application form; eligible students will be considered automatically by the MD/PhD Committee and the Dean, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry will forward the name of the nominee to the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research for final approval.

Neil McEwen Memorial Graduate Scholarship in Welding (Materials) Engineering

Eligibility: Awarded on an annual basis to a student registered full-time in a graduate degree program in the Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering whose major field of study and research is Welding Engineering. In the absence of a candidate whose major field of study is Welding Engineering, a suitable candidate from an associated area of study or research such as Materials Processing in the Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering may be chosen. The recipient will be selected on the basis of first class academic standing. Students in a master’s degree program are eligible to hold scholarships during the first two years of their program and may be offered this scholarship for a maximum of two years. Students registered in a doctoral program are eligible to hold scholarships up to and including the fifth year of their program and may be offered this scholarship for a maximum of three years.

JDH McFetridge Graduate Scholarship in Secondary Education

Endowed by Dr Patricia A McFetridge, Professor Emeritus in the Department of Elementary Education, in memory of her husband Dr John Douglas Haig McFetridge (PhD, University of Alberta, 1971)

Value: $3,650

Eligibility: Awarded annually to an outstanding student registered full-time in a doctoral program in Secondary Education whose area of research is in the teaching of English with an emphasis on writing, literature, communication, or multi-media. A recipient may be selected in open competition to hold the scholarship for a second year.

Application: There is no application form; eligible students will be considered automatically by the Department of Secondary Education.

William S McGregor Award for Entrepreneurial Excellence

Herbert Marshall McLuhan Graduate Student Award

Eligibility: Awarded annually to MACT students in support of approved travel expenses related to research. Support is available for travel to a research conference, symposium, library, archive, museum, etc, where the student will interact with colleagues and receive important information and advice related to the student’s research. As support is available only once during a student’s program, it is anticipated that the travel selected will be a highlight in the student’s research program. Applicants must be actively engaged in research towards a project which has been approved by their supervisor and must have been accepted by a recognized association/organization to present their research as a paper, presentation, poster, panel or symposium participant, or must be planning, organizing, and/or leading a professional or academic colloquium in an area of specialization relevant to their final project. They must demonstrate the relevance of the proposed presentation/activity to the final project. A recipient of the award must submit a short report (200 - 300 words) to the Director at the conclusion of the event. The award is not intended to support routine data collection or to support participation at a conference as an observer. There will be a maximum of 3 awards granted per academic year (1 July to 30 June).

Application: Eligible students with an approved research project and a relevant opportunity as defined above, should confirm their intention with their supervisor, in writing, outlining the following: details of the event, the relationship of the event to project research; the nature of their presentation, paper, poster, leadership, etc; a proposed budget; and date for final report submission. The supervisor will present the applicant’s proposal and documentation to the Program Director, who will present it to the Graduate Student Award Committee, Faculty of Extension.

Professor JB McQuitty Graduate Scholarship

Edna Minton Endowment Fund for Cancer Nursing Research

Outstanding Dissertation Award in Research for Teacher Education

Endowed by an anonymous donor in memory of John and Dorothy Trenerry and all parents who value the place of teachers in education

Value: A commemorative plaque, a $200 cash award, economy return airfare from place of employment to Edmonton plus one night accommodation.

Eligibility: Awarded to the best PhD dissertation in teacher education completed in the Faculty of Education at the University of Alberta. Awarded every two years, in even-numbered years, when a deserving dissertation is nominated; there may be years when no award is given. The recipient will be required to provide a lecture on their dissertation research within one year of notification of award. The lecture will be held in the Centre for Research for Teacher Education and Development (CRTED).

Application: Eligible applicants should submit a copy of their dissertation, a current CV, and a letter of nomination from their supervisor or a member of the supervisory committee that outlines the strengths of the dissertation and its relevance for this award to the Centre for Research for Teacher Education; Faculty of Education, 633 Education Building South. The dissertation must have been completed within two years of the October submission date in the award year.
