Melba Sadler Graduate Scholarship in Art and Design

Eligibility: Awarded annually to a full-time student in a graduate degree program in the Fine Arts (Painting, Drawing, Sculpture, Photography, and Printmaking). Sadler Graduate Scholarship in Mechanical Engineering

Marcel Sale Memorial MBA Natural Resources and Energy
Graduate Scholarship

Funded by Department of Energy, Alberta Government in memory of Marcel Sale to recognize his important and long-standing contribution over the years to the Government of Alberta’s Department of Energy

Value: $1,000

Eligibility: Awarded annually to a student enrolled full-time in the Natural Resources and Energy specialization of the first year of the MBA degree program. Recipients will be selected on the basis of academic performance, work experience prior to entering the program, and GMAT scores.

Jeffrey R Sampson Memorial Graduate Prize

Endowed by friends of the late Jeffrey R Sampson, former professor of Computing Science

Value: $1,150

Eligibility: Awarded to a full-time student in a graduate degree program in Computing Science who has achieved the highest grade point average at the end of the first year based on at least three graduate courses, excluding CMPUT 603. In the case of a tie, the overall academic record will be considered. Preference will be given to a student who is not receiving other departmental awards concurrently.

Dianne Samson Graduate Student Travel Award

Endowed by family and friends of the late Dianne Samson

Value: $1,500

Eligibility: Awarded annually to a full-time student registered in a graduate degree program in the Department of History and Classics who is working in any area of history other than classical history. The award is to provide travel funds to visit archives, libraries, or other research centres.

Application: Eligible students should submit a written proposal and budget justifying their travel plans to the Graduate Advisor, Department of History and Classics.

Dr John Samuel Memorial Graduate Scholarship

Endowed by the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences and colleagues of the late Dr John Samuel, professor and scientist from 1985 to 2007

Value: $1,000

Eligibility: Awarded annually to a student registered full-time in a graduate degree program in the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences on the basis of superior academic standing and scholarly achievement. Preference will be given to a student with teaching experience who has made a contribution to the Pharmacy Graduate Student Association.

Thelma R Scambler Scholarship

Christopher Scarfe Memorial Graduate Scholarship in Geology

Endowed by the family, colleagues, and friends of the late Dr Christopher Scarfe, in honor of his outstanding contributions both to the University of Alberta and to the advancement of knowledge in Petrology and Mineralogy

Eligibility: Awarded annually to a student entering or already enrolled in a graduate degree program in Petrology and/or Mineralogy. The successful recipient will possess an outstanding academic record, and exceptional research abilities, skills, and potential. Should no suitable candidate from the area of Petrology or Mineralogy be available in any given year, the department will consider individuals studying in other areas of Geology. Part-time students are eligible for this award.

John and Patricia Schlosser Environment Scholarship

Endowed by colleagues and friends of John L Schlosser, former Chair of the Board of Governors, University of Alberta

Value: $7,800

Eligibility: Awarded annually to a student in a graduate degree program whose research, scholarship or creative work is judged to be a most outstanding contribution to our understanding, appreciation or amelioration of our earthly environment. If no suitable candidate is available in any given year, the scholarship will not be awarded.

Application: There is no application form; the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research will request one nomination from each eligible department. The Graduate Scholarship Committee will make the final selection. Deadline: 1 June for submission of nominations from departments to the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research.

Rodney E Schneck Prize in Organizational Analysis

Endowed by the colleagues and friends of Rodney E Schneck in recognition of his outstanding leadership as Dean of the Faculty of Business.

Value: $2,250

Eligibility: Awarded annually to a student, who is entering the second year of the MBA program in the Faculty of Business, and who is working in Organizational Studies, Strategy and Policy, or Human Resource Management. Applicants will be considered primarily on the basis of superior academic achievement with consideration also given to leadership qualities demonstrated through involvement in extracurricular and community activities. Part-time students are eligible for this award.

Application: Eligible students should apply in writing to the Associate Dean, MBA Programs, 2-30 Business Building by 30 May. A resume or curriculum vitae should be included.

School of Public Health Graduate Scholarship

Endowed by the School of Public Health

Value: $6,000

Eligibility: Awarded annually to a full-time student who has completed at least one full-time term in a Master of Public Health degree program in the School of Public Health on the basis of superior academic achievement (grade point average of 3.5 or greater), exemplary achievements, related experience and/or contributions to their field/community, academic unit and/or the School of Public Health. This scholarship may not be held concurrently with a major award (value of $13,000 or greater).

Application: Eligible applicants must provide: 1) a short summary (no more than one page) which includes the applicant’s area of specialization, related academic background and achievements, related work and internship experience, and contributions to their field/community, academic unit and/or the School of public Health and 2) a current curriculum vitae. The academic unit must provide: 1) unofficial University of Alberta transcripts and 2) cumulative GPA on MPH. All documents must be received in the School of Public Health by the deadline of April 30.

JR Schrumm Memorial History Prize

Eligibility: Awarded to the student in the MA program in Canadian History who presents the best paper to any graduate seminar in Canadian History. Part-time students are eligible for this award.

Scotiabank Mexico Corporate Social Responsibility Award

Endowed by generous contributions of Scotiabank

Value: $500 - $1,000

Eligibility: Awarded to students with satisfactory academic standing pursuing *formal international study opportunities between Mexico and the Faculty of Agricultural, Life & Environmental Sciences (ALES), University of Alberta, with a preference for areas related to the broad principles outlined in the Scotiabank Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) framework (i.e. social, economic, environmental, and ethical responsibilities).

*Formal international study opportunities are those which involve students from ALES and/or students from partner institutions in Mexico pursuing an ALES approved study opportunity.

Application: Applicants must submit a brief formal request to the ALES Associate Dean, Academic. The request must include a description of the formal study opportunity, an estimated budget, and the expected benefit of such opportunity. In cases involving multiple participants, a single application may be submitted along with a list of participants. The competition will be open year round.

Isobel Secord Graduate Scholarship

Eligibility: Awarded annually to two students entering PhD programs in Nursing at the University of Alberta. Selection will be made on the basis of superior academic and scholarly achievement. Research potential and quality of published scholarly works will also be considered. There are no citizenship restrictions.

Pundit RD Sharma Memorial Graduate Award in Mathematical and Statistical Sciences

Donald A Shaw Memorial Graduate Scholarship

Endowed through a bequest from the estate of Eva Bernice Heuer in memory of her brother, Donald A Shaw, who received a BSc (Agriculture), 1951 and a MSc in Plant Science, 1953 from the University of Alberta

Eligibility: Awarded annually to a student registered in a graduate degree program in the area of Bioresource and Food Engineering or Land Reclamation and Remediation.

Application: There is no application form; eligible students will be considered jointly by Agricultural, Food and Nutritional Science and Renewable Resources in the Faculty of Agricultural, Life and Environmental Sciences. One recommended applicant will be forwarded to the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research.

Flore Shaw Graduate Scholarship in Music

Endowed by Dr Flore Shaw of Berwyn, Alberta

Value: $4,800

Eligibility: Awarded annually to a graduate of the Master of Music program or the Master of Arts in Music program of the University of Alberta, based on outstanding merit in studies and strong potential ability for a professional career in music. The award must be used toward further study either with a recognized private teacher or at a recognized institution. The scholarship is to be given as one award and may not be divided. Applicants may apply only once.

Shoppers Drug Mart Graduate Scholarship in Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences

Joan Shore Memorial Scholarship in Graduate Studies

Bill Shostak Wildlife Award

Eligibility: Awarded annually to a full-time doctoral student at the University of Alberta to research the conservation and management of fish and wildlife in any or all of the provinces of Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan. Applicants must have completed at least one year of a related PhD program at the University of Alberta. Awarded on the basis of academic achievement and desire to communicate effectively with the general public concerning the results of fish and wildlife research and conservation. Preference will be given to students whose program emphasizes the identification and timely correction of problems affecting conservation and management of fish and wildlife. Applicants must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents.

Application: Eligible students should contact their Department Chair in order to be considered for nomination.

Dr Jane Silvius Graduate Scholarship in Child Development

Endowed by The Alberta Child Development Foundation

Value: $13,000

Eligibility: Awarded annually to an outstanding full-time student entering or continuing in a doctoral program in the Department of Psychology who is conducting research on the social, cognitive, or biological factors that affect or interfere with normal child development. Applicants may apply in open competition for subsequent awards and may hold the award for up to four years. A student who holds a full-time assistantship or a major scholarship, as defined by the Graduate Scholarship Committee, is not eligible to hold this award.

Harry Edward Sim Memorial Scholarship

Funded by the Alberta Masonry Institute, the Masonry Contractors Association of Alberta, and Genstar Building Materials in memory of Harry Edward Sim

Eligibility: Awarded annually to a student in a MSc or PhD program who is doing thesis work on a topic relating to structural masonry. Part-time students are eligible for this award.

Ian Sim Memorial Graduate Scholarship

Endowed by the friends and family of the late Ian Sim

Value: $1,000

Eligibility: Awarded annually to a student registered full-time in a graduate program in Physical Therapy at the University of Alberta who is committed to pursuing life long learning to further their career. The recipient will be selected on the basis of superior academic achievement equivalent to a grade point average of 3.5 or greater on the University of Alberta grading scale. Preference will be given to a student who has obtained their undergraduate degree in Canada.

Application: Eligible students should submit a letter of application that demonstrates their recent commitments to lifelong learning, explains their lifelong learning philosophy as it relates to their career aspirations, and how those activities will enhance their skills as a practicing physical therapist. Letters of application should be submitted to the Chair, Department of Physical Therapy, 2-50 Corbett Hall, University of Alberta, T6G 2G4 by September 15th.

Robert Simonet Graduate Scholarship

Value: $3,200 (PhD); $2,800 (MSc)

Eligibility: Awarded annually to full-time students in a graduate degree program in Agricultural, Food and Nutritional Science (Horticulture) who have completed at least one year of coursework and research toward an MSc or PhD degree. Applicants must have high academic standing and well-defined thesis research. Scholarship recipients are eligible to be nominated in subsequent years.

Robert Simonet Travel Bursary

Value: $800 (PhD); $400 (MSc)

Eligibility: Two awards available annually to cover expenses incurred in attending major scientific conferences. Candidates must be full-time students in an MSC or PhD program and be presenting a paper in the area of Horticulture. Awards given will be based upon the calibre of the conferences and the estimated costs submitted by the candidates.

Slavic and East European Studies 75th Anniversary MA Scholarship

LB Smillie Book Prize

Value: $100 for books

Eligibility: Awarded to students achieving the highest standing in Biochemistry 420/520 "Protein chemistry, structure and function", or related course. One award will be offered to the graduate student who achieves the highest standing in Biochemistry 520, and one award will be offered to the undergraduate student who achieves the highest standing in Biochemistry 420.

Application: There is no application form; eligible students will be considered automatically by the Department of Biochemistry.

J Macgregor Smith Graduate Scholarship

Sochan Ukrainian Folklore Essay Award

Eligibility: Awarded to an undergraduate or first-year graduate student for the best essay written for a Ukrainian or Ukrainian Diaspora Folklore course at the University of Alberta. Part-time students are eligible for the award

Application: Eligible students should submit a copy of the essay with a cover letter to the Award Committee of the Peter and Doris Kule Centre for Ukrainian and Canadian Folklore in the Department of Modern Languages and Cultural Studies by December 20 or April 25.

The Society of Edmonton Demographers Graduate Scholarship

Endowed by the Society of Edmonton Demographers who created the Alberta Endowment Fund for Demographic Research

Value: $3,000

Eligibility: Awarded annually to a student entering, or continuing in a full-time doctoral program whose major field of study and research is demography. Awarded on the basis of academic merit and research potential. There is no restriction based on citizenship. Preference will be given to doctoral students in the Department of Sociology. In the event there are no eligible students in the Department of Sociology, the scholarship may be offered to a full-time student in another doctoral program at the University of Alberta whose major field of study and research is demography. If a suitable candidate is not available, then the scholarship will not be awarded.

Application: A letter of application, which includes a statement of proposed research, and all academic transcripts, must be received in the Sociology Graduate Program Office on or before 15th September. The Department of Sociology's Graduate Admissions and Awards Committee will review all applications and forward the name of the recommended candidate to the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research.

Jean Isabel Soper Memorial Graduate Scholarship in Music

Value: $6,650

Eligibility: Awarded annually on the basis of superior academic merit to a full-time student entering a MA or PhD program in the Department of Music who will not hold a major scholarship. If no suitable MA or PhD candidate is found at the time of selection, the scholarship may be offered to a full-time student entering the MMus or DMus in Composition. If no suitable candidate is found, the scholarship will not be awarded in that year.

Jean Isabel Soper Memorial Graduate Scholarship in Science

Endowed by the late J Isabel Soper

Value: $6,850

Eligibility: Awarded annually on the basis of superior academic merit to a student entering a graduate degree program who will be registered full-time in an area of research related to engineering and the physical sciences. There is a dearth of women engaging in scientific and technological graduate studies; for this reason, preference will be given to women conducting research in these areas until such time as this disadvantage is overcome. If no suitable candidate is found at the time of selection, the scholarship will not be awarded in that year.

Kennett Y Spencer Memorial Scholarship

Endowed through the will of the late Kennett Y Spencer

Value: $2,100

Eligibility: The scholarship is open to residents of northern Alberta (as defined by Northern Alberta Development Council), Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut. Awarded annually to a student at the University of Alberta on the basis of high academic achievement (equivalent to a grade point average of 3.5 or greater on the University of Alberta grading scale) and original research carried out in a discipline pertaining to northern studies. Part-time students are eligible for this award.

Application: The application form and information about the application process and required supporting documents is available on the University of Alberta, Canadian Circumpolar Institute (CCI) website. Eligible students should submit a complete application package to the Canadian Circumpolar Institute, 1-42 Pembina Hall, University of Alberta, Edmonton AB T6G 2H8, by August 14th. CCI will review the letters of application and forward the name of one nominee to the Graduate Scholarship Committee for final approval.

Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus Association of Northern Alberta Graduate Scholarship

Dr Donald R Stanley Graduate Scholarship in Environmental (Civil) Engineering

Endowed by Dr Donald R Stanley

Value: $3,800

Eligibility: Awarded to a full-time student registered in or admissible to a graduate degree program in Civil Engineering pursuing research in the area of Environmental Engineering. The criteria for the award will include academic achievement and either demonstrated research ability or research potential.

Application: The application process will be administered through the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. A description of the research to be undertaken, a transcript of academic record, and the names of three referees must be included.

Deadline: September 15th for submission of nominations from Engineering to the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research. Check with the department for internal deadlines.

Andrew Stewart Memorial Graduate Prize

Maurice, Mary, and Max Stewart Graduate Scholarship in Economics

Endowed through a bequest from the estate of Max Douglas Stewart in honour of Maurice Howard Stewart, born in 1889, and Mary Penn (Ritchie) Stewart, born in 1891, and their sons, Max Douglas Stewart, born in 1919 in Edmonton, Professor of Economics at the Royal Military College of Canada, the University of Alberta, and Wilfrid Laurier University, and Maurice Bruce Stewart, born in 1932 in Edmonton, winner of the Governor-General’s Gold medal at the University of Alberta, and Professor of Physics at Willamette University, Salem, Oregon.

Eligibility: Awarded annually to a student who is registered full-time in a graduate degree program in the Department of Economics at the University of Alberta and who received the highest standing in the final year (minimum A-) of a Bachelor’s degree from Wilfrid Laurier University. In the event that there is no Wilfrid Laurier University applicant who has sufficiently high standing, the award will be offered to the student with the highest standing (at least A- in the final year) of a Bachelor’s degree from another Ontario University and whose permanent residence in the two years immediately preceding the end of their final Bachelor’s degree examinations must have been in either Bruce County or Grey County in Ontario.

Eligibility: Awarded annually to a student registered full-time in a graduate degree program in the Department of Modern Languages and Cultural Studies whose research focus is Ukrainian Literature or Ukrainian Linguistics. Students of Ukrainian Literature may pursue their research in combination with the Program in Comparative Literature. The intent of the award is to attract and retain the best and most promising students by providing top-up funding to a student who will receive other financial support offered by the University of Alberta or the department, at a value equivalent to, or greater than the minimum salary for a full-time graduate assistant for an 8-month period. Preference will be given to students in a PhD program. The award funds may be used to defray all educational or research-related expenses, including travel. A recipient may be nominated to hold the award in subsequent years.

Eligibility: Two awards offered annually to a student registered full-time in a graduate degree program in a department within the Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine and in a department within the School of Public Health. The recipients will be selected on the basis of satisfactory academic standing, a personal intent letter on a topic provided in advance and experience in an interprofessional learning experience as defined by the University of Alberta Interprofessional Learning Pathway. A student registered in a master’s degree program is eligible to hold the award during the first or second year of the graduate program. A student registered in a doctoral program is eligible to hold the award during the first year, or up to and including the fifth year of the graduate program. These activities will be supported by the Health Sciences Education Research Commons (HSERC) at the University of Alberta.

West Fraser Timber Co. Ltd. Graduate Scholarship in Silviculture and/or Integrated Resource Management

Eligibility: Awarded annually to a newly admitted graduate student registered full-time in a master’s or doctoral degree program in the Department of Renewable Resources. Selection is based on superior academic standing (equivalent to a grade point average of 3.5 or greater on the University of Alberta grading scale) and research in the areas silviculture and/or integrated resource management related to sustaining and enhancing the forest resources of Alberta. A recipient may apply in open competition to hold the scholarship for a second year. Under exceptional circumstances the scholarship committee may consider applications from students already in the program.

Eligibility: Awarded to a student of Hungarian citizenship with superior academic credentials (equivalent to a grade point average of 3.5 or greater on the University of Alberta grading scale) who is registered full-time in the PhD program in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Alberta. The recipient will be selected on the basis of academic achievement. The scholarship is granted for up to four years to a student registered in a PhD degree program, subject to review each year. The scholarship is intended for university students whose professional career goal is to conduct advanced research in hydrogeology. On an exceptional basis only, if an outstanding candidate pursuing a Master’s degree is identified by the selection committee consideration may also be given to awarding the scholarship for up to two years, subject to review after the first year.

Tye Graduate Scholarship in Corporate Governance

Eligibility: Awarded annually to a student who is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident and who is registered full-time or part-time in the final year of the MBA degree program. The recipient will be selected on the basis of outstanding academic performance, a grade point average of 3.5 or greater, and demonstrated interest in the field of corporate governance. The recipient will have demonstrated a keen interest in corporate governance and its relationship to shareholders and society with particular emphasis on corporate ethics and accountability.

The recipient’s interest is expected to be primarily focused on companies listed on Canadian stock exchanges, with the scope of interest extending to Crown Corporations and ‘not-for-profit’ organizations. The focus should address issues of Board ethics, transparency, independence of corporate directors, compliance with current policies and guidelines established by CICA, Institute of Corporate Directors and other such recognized governing bodies.

Dr John Waters Memorial Graduate Scholarship

Funded by the Dr John Waters Memorial Fund in recognition of Dr Waters’ leadership in the field of public health

Eligibility: Awarded annually to a student registered full-time in the first or second year of a master’s degree program at the University of Alberta. The recipient will be selected on the basis of superior academic achievement (minimum grade point average equivalent to 3.5 or greater on the University of Alberta grading scale) and in the field of public health with a demonstrated focus in the area of immunization and control/elimination of communicable disease and/or the promotion and protection of the health of infants and children.

Application: There is no application form; eligible students should submit a letter of application to their home department by August 1st. Each eligible department will forward one nomination to the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research by September 15th and the Graduate Scholarship Committee will make the final selection.

Libby Ritter Warick Memorial Graduate Travel Bursary

Tom Wegmann Graduate Award

Eligibility: Awarded in even numbered years to a student registered full-time in a graduate degree program whose research interests are in basic immunological mechanisms. Selection will be based on academic record, risk taking in both project and career path, and area of research interest. Preference will be given to students with an interest in reproductive immunology or projects with an international scope.

Application: Eligible applicants should submit a letter of application, a curriculum vitae, two letters of recommendation (one of which must be from the research supervisor), a current transcript, and a brief autobiographical sketch to the Chair, Medical Microbiology and Immunology, 1-41 Medical Sciences, University of Alberta by August 1st. The selection committee will forward the name of one nominee to the Chair, Graduate Scholarship Committee for final approval.

West Fraser Timber Graduate Scholarship in Enhanced Forest Management

Established by West Fraser Timber Co Ltd to encourage research into enhanced forest management in Alberta's forestry industry

Value: variable, up to a maximum value of $25,000

Eligibility: Awarded annually to new graduate students undertaking PhD level studies in the areas of silviculture, forest genetics, management, growth and yield, protection or other areas related to sustaining and enhancing the forest resources of Alberta. The scholarships will be awarded to incoming students with an excellent academic background and the highest potential in research. Under exceptional circumstances the scholarship committee will consider applications from students already in the program. A recipient may be nominated to hold this scholarship for a second year.

Application: Eligible students should submit a letter of application for this scholarship and current curriculum vitae to the Associate Chair (Graduate Programs), Department of Renewable Resources, 751 General Services, University of Alberta.

Deadline: 1 June. Applications received after 1 June will be considered only if funding is still available.

Dr Carl H Westcott Memorial Fellowship

Value: $7,600

Eligibility: The Fellowship is tenable at any university whose faculty are actively engaged in research at TRIUMF. Awarded annually, normally to a PhD candidate, who is far enough along in his or her program to have demonstrated excellent research capabilities. Applicants must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents and will normally be registered full-time at one of the founding universities (University of Alberta, University of British Columbia, University of Victoria, or Simon Fraser University) or at one of the associated universities (University of Manitoba, Universite de Montreal, University of Regina, or University of Toronto). Candidates from other institutions whose faculty have significant experimental activities at TRIUMF will also be considered.

Western Grains Research Foundation Endowment Fund Graduate Scholarship

Funded by WGRF through a gift to the University of Alberta every three years to ensure the sustainability of a vibrant and competitive agriculture economy and healthy rural communities in Western Canada through the development of highly trained specialists in crop research.

Value:Based on $100,000 every three years, there will be either two awards of a minimum of $25,000 per year for two years for Master’s students, OR one award of a minimum of $33,333 per year for three years for a PhD student

Eligibility: Open to students registered full-time in a Master of Science or PhD degree in the areas of Plant Sciences or Soil Science. Applicants must hold an undergraduate degree, preferably from a Canadian University. Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of a proven record of outstanding academic achievement in the most recent degree received and the proposed research plan during the graduate program in which the scholarship is to be received.

Dr Leonard Wiebe Graduate Award in Pharmaceutical Sciences

Claude Winspear MBA Award

Eligibility: Awarded annually to outstanding student(s) who are registered full-time in an MBA program at the University of Alberta. Recipients will be selected on the basis of demonstrated leadership through involvement and participation in university or community organizations, sports or cultural activities, and academic standing. Previous scholastic achievement is one factor to be considered, but not necessarily the determining factor, when making an award. Preference will be given to students newly admitted to the MBA program and who satisfy any one of the following three criteria:

1. A student who has a background of social entrepreneurship or who has the intent to enter this field of specialization subsequent to completion of the MBA degree.

2. A student who is from the arts community and who is interested in acquiring business management skills with the intent of returning to the arts community.

3. A student who is interested in acquiring an additional language through an international exchange course.

Harriet Snowball Winspear Graduate Fellowship in the Performing Arts
