Step 4: Submit Your Thesis to the FGSR

Theses must be submitted within six months of the date of the final oral examination.

There are submission deadlines for each convocation period and registration requirements when submitting your thesis. We recommend you submit your thesis a minimum of 3-5 working days before any deadline, as corrections may be required.

See Thesis Submission Deadlines.

Graduate students may submit their thesis in one of two ways:

  • Electronically
-involves converting your thesis to a PDF file and submitting to ERA
  • Paper (hard-copy)
-involves submitting two hard copies of your thesis (one to be bound for U of A Libraries)
See Electronic Vs. Paper Submission

Restricting Access to a Thesis
Students wanting to restrict access to their theses for up to one year must complete and submit  the  Request to Restrict Access to a Thesis form (found in the Forms Cabinet) to FGSR with supporting documentation. See Section 8.13 of the Graduate Program Manual. The request must be made prior to the submission of the Thesis Approval/ Program Completion form to FGSR. If the thesis is submitted through ERA and the request to restrict access has been approved, then we will hold the thesis (in ERA) and release it through  ERA at the end of the embargo period.

Third Party Submissions
Students submitting a paper (hard-copy) may have their thesis submitted by a third party. See Third Party Submission.
