Minimum Admission Requirement
GPA
  • a baccalaureate degree or its academic equivalent from an academic institution recognized by the University of Alberta
  • 3.3 GPA on a 4.0 scale on the most recent two years of full-time study (or equivalent)
  • the minimum GPA required may be higher from year to year depending on the applicant pool
English Language Proficiency
Applicants with degrees/qualifications in a language other than English may need to demonstrate English Language Proficiency through one of the following exam scores:
  • TOEFL: minimum score of 630 (paper-based) or a total score of 109 with a score of at least 26 on the speaking component and a score of 22 on all other components (internet-based) for departmental funding consideration; all other applicants minimum TOEFL score of 600 (paper-based) or 100 (internet-based) with a score of at least 22 on each of the components
  • MELAB: minimum score of 85
  • IELTS (Academic): minimum overall band score of 7, with at least 6 on each band
  • CAEL: overall minimum score of 60, with at least 60 on each subtest
  • PTE (Academic): overall minimum score of 75 for departmental funding consideration; all other applicants minimum overall score of 68

  • ~$3,590 a year to offset the International Student Differential Fee applied to tuition and fees; the department may cover this differential fee each year for 2.66 years of an MSc and 5 years of a PhD, or until thesis defense (whichever comes first)

  • active Biology Graduate Student Association (BGSA) that organizes annual Graduate Student Research Days, social activities and workshops on preparation for candidacy exams and thesis defense
