Minimum Admission Requirement
GPA
  • a baccalaureate degree or its academic equivalent from an academic institution recognized by the University of Alberta
  • 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale on the most recent two years of full-time study (or equivalent)
English Language Proficiency
Applicants with degrees/qualifications in a language other than English may need to demonstrate English Language Proficiency through one of the following exam scores:
  • TOEFL: minimum score of 550 (paper-based) or a total score of 88 with a score of at least 20 on each of the individual skill areas (internet-based)
  • MELAB: minimum score of 85
  • IELTS (Academic): minimum overall band score of 6.5, with at least 5 on each band
  • CAEL: overall minimum score of 60, with at least 60 on each subtest
  • PTE (Academic): overall minimum score of 59

  • approximately $5,000 CAD per year (full-time thesis Canadian/Permanent Resident)
  • approximately $8,650 CAD per year (full-time thesis International student)
  • course-based master's fees are approximately $8,700 CAD (Canadian/Permanent Resident) and $16,000 CAD (International)

Canadian

  • $19,000 per year for MA and MSc thesis programs
  • $20,000 per year for PhD
  • funding may come from fellowships, scholarships, and bursaries from national or provincial research agencies, or funding sources such as industry
  • recipients of all major external awards are given generous additional salary funding
  • professors cover the cost of your research project
  • all graduate students have access to additional funds to present results at national and international conferences, and to conduct research abroad for several months as part of their program
  • there are a limited number of partial scholarships available for course-based programs; students are responsible for paying most programs costs from their own funding sources

International

  • same as Canadian (see above)
