Minimum Admission Requirement
GPA
  • a four-year baccalaureate degree or its academic equivalent from an academic institution recognized by the University of Alberta
  • 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale on the most recent two years of full-time study (or equivalent)
English Language Proficiency
Applicants with degrees/qualifications in a language other than English may need to demonstrate English Language Proficiency through one of the following exam scores:
  • TOEFL: minimum score of 580 (paper-based) or 88 (internet-based)
  • MELAB: minimum score of 86
  • IELTS (Academic): minimum overall band score of 6.5, with at least 5 on each band
  • CAEL: minimum overall score of 70
  • PTE (Academic): overall minimum score of 59
  • MEd and PhD Teaching English as a Second Language students must have one of the following:
  • TOEFL: score of 600 (paper-based) and a minimum TSE score of 55 (SPEAK scores are not acceptable)
  • TOEFL iBT: score of 98 with minimum scores of 28 in the speaking component, 22 in the reading component and 24 in the listening and writing component
  • IELTS (Academic): minimum score of 8 on listening/speaking bands with no band less than 7
  • CAEL: score of at least 80 on listening/speaking bands with no band less than 70
  • PTE (Academic): overall minimum score of 67
