Killam Exchange Scholarships with France

In 1969, the University of Alberta approved that revenue from the Killam General Endowment Fund be used to support a mutual exchange of students between France and the University of Alberta. This exchange was established in 1951.

Each year, the Department of Modem Languages and Cultural Studies receives three instructors ("assistants") from France for eight months, one of whom is placed at the Faculte Saint-Jean. The remaining two instructors are retained in the French Language Program in the department.

In return, as part of this reciprocal agreement, the department recommends three graduating or University of Alberta graduate students, currently enrolled in a program that includes a major or minor in French, to be teaching assistants in France for seven months.

French candidates for the assistantship apply to the Ministre de l'Education Nationale in Paris on a competitive basis; their review and selection take place in France. These assistants receive their scholarship payment of $10,000 from the Killam account created for this program.

Candidates from the University of Alberta apply to the Killam French Exchange Liaison Officer, Department of Modern Languages and Cultural Studies. Application, review, and selection take place in that department.
