International Students

International students are an integral part of the University of Alberta community.

They make up more than 27% of our graduate student population—1,900+ students from more than 120 different countries.

That’s why the U of A created University of Alberta International, an office that delivers a network of services designed specifically for international students.

Providing a friendly welcome at the airport, a specialized orientation and dozens of workshops throughout the year, University of Alberta International helps you transition to Canada and offers support.

  The International Centre
A one-stop resource centre offering orientation, workshops and seminars, plus personal advice on immigration, financial or academic issues. Students are always welcome to drop in with questions or just to relax, unwind and socialize.

  International House
This student residence has a global outlook thanks to specially-designed social and cultural programming with an international focus. Both Canadian and international students gather under one roof to live, eat and work together.

Sponsored Student Program

This office links sponsoring organizations and their students with a U of A representative to ensure a smooth transition through the application process and into life as a U of A student.

Contact the Sponsored Student Program if you will be sponsored by your government, or a national or multinational company.

Visiting Students

Enrolled at another university but want a U of A experience? Attend the U of A for a term or a year as a visiting student.

Visiting students may be permitted to enroll in graduate-level courses, either through a formal exchange or with the consent of the department.

We also have Research 900, a special registration for graduate student visitors who just want to conduct research at the U of A without taking classes—and you still get access to U of A student privileges and services.

Working in Canada

International students who are in good academic standing and have completed six months of full-time studies may be eligible to work off campus. See Off Campus Work Program.

Once you graduate from the University of Alberta, you may be eligible to work in Canada for up to three years. See Working after Graduation.
